I'll stick with my kitty liter buckets. They look tacky and I made sure to write USED on the back of both of them. It helps to make the bike look less desirable so people are less likely to steal/mess with it...just the way I like it. I had my kitty liter buckets drag on the ground behind me a short distance last year when both of the top bolts on the rack failed on me. The buckets were totally fine afterwards and continued on keeping on the rest of the trip(another 5500-6000 miles). They remained waterproof, durable and reliable. What more can you ask for in an item.

One could also use that huge canvas to paint them and make them look real nice or cover them in bumper stickers. I personally am not a fan of kit.lit. buckets but if I did have them I would get friends to paint them (since my art talents are music, cooking and computer based graphic design.

I was told that Ortlieb is coming out with a set of rear panniers that are designed to look just like kitty litter buckets for those very same reasons.
