I have a ESCORT 3-persons Dome Tent that's retangular 6 feet by 7 feet by 3 feet 8 inches high with a weight of just over 5 pounds. If it's packed with the original length ploes it's about 24 inches long and 6 inches square. I cut my poles in half and add ferrules to the cut ends. This allows mt to pack the tent so it's about 12 inches long. It's the original long poles that make up the length and weight. I got the tent at a Canadian Tire store when the tent was on sale at the end of a season. I like it because in a crowded campground I can bring the bicycle inside the tent with me at night. I remove the front wheel and the bike rests on the front low-rider rack and is very stable. Even at 24 inches length it'll fit on the rear rack either transversly or longitudinally. I prefer it longitudinally (and my sleeping pad) so they don't stick out and snag on brush or trees.

There are a lot of inespensive tents that are good for summer camping and that don't cost a fortune.

Cheers

I have a lower-priced Eureka 3-person tent (actually got it free). Weights about 6 lbs IIRC, not light but the roominess is handy, fairly opaque too in contrast to many of the lighter tents.

Is this the OR Helium bivy? If so, how do you like it?

Yes it is. For stealth, it was great. In hotter, regions, I would make sure you can get a breeze through the opening. Also test out setting it up with just the bike or without.

And yet another tent in the stable, Kelty Gunnison 2.2. My largest tent comes in at 37 square ft and right at 5 lbs. Very roomy with 2 doors and 2 large vestibules. Picked it up for a song on one of those crazy Sierra Trading Post clearances with coupon. No opinion yet on whether those two vents on top really help with ventilation or simply increase the risk of rain getting into tent

Sierra Design Clip Flashlight, used for 13 years until I gave it to my sisters' kids.

Replaced by another Sierra Design Clip Flashlight:

Then I got a REI Quarter Dome UL 3 for hiking trips with someone, but I use it occasionally for bike touring. Note the matching underwear.

I also got a Tarptent Rainbow for solo hiking trips. I don't really use it for bike touring. I think I should've bought one Zpack Duo instead of the REI and Tarpent. Anyway... here's the Rainbow on a hiking trip:

Nice. I always kind of chuckle when people suggest a hammock since I also live in socal. Like what am I going to attach it to, a yucca and a rock?? But you've found a way.

Where is that, if you don't mind me asking? Looks like Big Pines or somewhere around there. I got to get up there for an overnighter soon myself.

That's Henninger Flats campground, just above Altadena. It's a short 2.5 mile hike or bike from the trailhead, but all uphill. This is a well maintained, free campground, accessible only by foot or by bike. It can get crowded with both backpackers and bikepackers on weekends but you'll always find a spot. I've been coming up here for over nighters about twice a month on average this past year. It's really a cool spot.

Also, they have a bunch of these stoves and plenty of FREE firewood too.

Thanks roadfix. Wow that is close. I've hiked a lot around Angeles Crest but never done that particular trail. Looks like a fun overnighter for sure. Will try sometime. I'd like to find one like that but with about a 20+ mile fire road leading up to it. I'm pretty sure there's something. I haven't looked that hard yet.

My last 3 day trip I took my ol' Alps Zenith 2, shown here without the fly on yet. It's a tad bulky and heavy compared to my ultralight backpacking tent, but I rarely use the Alps anymore so wanted to get some use out of it and air it out...

For an inexpensive $100 tent from 10 years ago, its been great.

This is the new REI Quarter Dome 1. About 2.5 lbs. six four and can sit up in it. Traded some red beans and rice for this beer at the campsite on the c and o.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I was able to verify today that you can indeed walk into a Walmart and find a decent looking tent for very cheap. Ozark Trail is the house brand and the cheapest of what I saw in the nearest store, but the website shows even more of them available in the same price range. The 4-person was about $35, so the smaller ones (prices not readily visible) might even be less. They also had 1- and 2-person OT tents in the store. I reiterate that I'm no fan of the store, but do not deny that there is low-priced (and possibly also cheap) camping gear out there.

Kelty Salida II

Used it these past 3 weeks on a pacific coast tour. Easy to put up and take down, kept me dry on 3 rainy nights. No complaints
