Anyone tour with clipless cycling sandals?
 

Are they any good? I saw a pair but don't want to spend the money if it's just gonna be a novelty and something I won't want to use much, or something I wouldn't want to wear for anything longer than a commute to the grocery store.

I looked at these, but I couldn't find any reviews

Keens & more so, Shimano SPD, sandals . performance* ? why wait for a revue? just buy them if you dont like them, they take returns.

Have Nashbar, Keens, old and new Shimano. The shimanos are my favorite: relatively open, stiff sole. As above, I wear wool socks and, if desperate, showers pass booties.

I switched to Keen clipless sandals last year and love them. Like others, I wear merino socks for comfort. I also have some neoprene socks, which came in handy while biking the Canadian portion of the GDMBR last September when it was very rainy and only just above freezing. My feet stayed warmer than regular cycling shoes would have been.

I had a lot of concern that gravel would get in the sandals, but with the protected toe design on thee Keens, it was not an issue, even though I walked the bike up a lot of steep gravel slopes on a few trips in the mountains.

I really like how much you feet can breathe in the sandals, and they are superb when you have frequent stream crossings (more of a bikepacking issue). They are also my favourite commuting footwear in the summer months.

Are these your only footwear on tour or do you also carry light sandals or something else

I only did two short (~5-6 days each) tours last summer, and that was the only footwear I took. They were so comfortable that I didn't feel the need to have a "comfy" pair of shoes or sandals to put on at the end of the day. I don't think I would hesitate to use these on longer tours, though.

On previous trips, I have always used cycling shoes with recessed spd cleats that doubled as hikers and carried some lightweight sandals for each night.

Both my wife and I use them. We both wore our Keens when we did a 6,000 mile ride across the US 2 summers ago. My Keens are deceased now and the new ones do not fit. So last year I ought the Nashbar ones and they work fine. Wore them everyday for a 6 week tour in Canada last year and they are going to Europe in a few weeks. This trip I am bringing a pair of Crocs for off bike wear. And I wear my sandals for Winter riding with 2 pairs of wool socks.

I am very happy with the Keens, I have the Commuter III model and the Pedal Arroyo model. I think both of those models are discontinued.

They also were very comfortable to walk in.

The keens are a bit too wide for me to put a shoe cover on them however.

Haven't used the Performance ones, but I've been doing almost all my biking (incl. tours) for the last couple years in the Shimano SPD sandals. In the winter I've worn them inside booties and with various types of socks depending on temperature and precipitation. Fortunately the booties I had were size 12 and the sandals size 10 - otherwise I don't think they would have fit.

for those wearing cycling sandals without socks, do you find
the tops of your feets getting sunburned?

I always wear socks, but a friend with open toe sandals (I think Exustar brand) never wears socks. His feet have a weird suntan.

another Keen fan. Tiger striped feet is a bonus:). FYI, not much skin is exposed with the Keens.

I tour with Shimano sandals and Lake sandals. Thick wool socks and/or rain socks come in handy high in the Rockies.

Are Lake sandal still available? I was unsuccessful when I searched.
