Rt. 40 Virginia: Lodging/Campgrounds
In another thread, jamawani and velonomad (thanks) recommended Rt. 40 in Virginia as a good alternate route to the TransAm. I was wondering if anyone knows about the availability, generally, of campgrounds/motels/hostels/free lodging etc. along or very near to that route.
Thanks! David in PA |
Probaly not going to find too many people who have rode that route.
Here is how I figure out my camping and lodging. First I determine approximately how may miles a day I plan to ride. taking in account the varying terrain. For example I usually ride about 70-80 miles per day when terrain is flat to rolling. 60-75 miles a day if it is hilly to mountainous. So, if I were leaving from Newport News I would take the bike route to Williamsburg then Jamestown , cross to Scotland on the ferry and then hook up with rt 40 westboud. at about 70 miles I would come to Stony Creek Va which is right on a exit of I-95, a quick search on yahoo or google for " stony creek va, camping" gives me a campground about 8 miles north of Stony Creek. however here is 3 motels at that exit on I-95. The next 73 miles would get me to Keysville va, and so on. when searching for camping also check woodall's camping guide. you can buy the book or use thier online version. There are also other guides to camping which you will run across when you do an internet search. I make it a point to call the campgrounds I plan to stay at before the tour. Sometimes listed campgrounds may be closed or out of business |
Virginia Game and Fish sites are quiet and free - -

Even though camping isn't usually allowed - if you are prudent, set up late, and leave early - there shouldn't be any problem. http://www.dgif.state.va.us/fishing/...iver/NOTTA.pdf |
