I just rode the GAP and 1/2 of the C&O this week. Peak fall colors on the GAP trail and the C&O was almost there. I got a one way car rental from Baltimore to Pittsburgh. Left Pittsburgh on Tuesday around 2pm. I made it past Williamsport, unfortunately the nights were very cold especially on the western side of the Allegheny Plateau. Damp 35F/2C each night. I had my summer bag and I was chilly in the bag. It is hard enough sleeping near the trains but cold feet made it worse. I threw in the towel yesterday, day 4 as the rains fell and temps were once expected to be in the 30's. I have a head cold today so it was a good call to return. Great trip nonetheless. The colors were superb, I rode completely self contained, water and pit toilets were still available on both trails, campgrounds were in good shape. I usually ride ultra light but used panniers to accommodate food/cooking stuff and my puffy jacket. Used everything I took Here are few pixs.

Doug, I have never seen anything like that in my life. That is one heck of a lot of pumpkins. Cool.

This is not a very good picture, but it will give you a sense of scale.

We were tempted to take Highway 5 and 5A from Hope to Kamloops, but after looking at the elevation profile, decided to take the "easy" way.

Crossing PA last month. For a couple of days, smoke all the way from western fires partially obscured the sun. The morning after I took this I could really smell it when I dropped down into a valley.
