Quill Stem/Column dimension discrepancy for new bars

Hi all -

I recently bought a new handle bar
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=526633

reference this thread:
http://www.bikeforums.net/touring/10...one-these.html

and this quill stem so i can put it on:
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=526634

Unfortunately for me, the new quill (a 1" quill - for my 1" fork - WRONG STEM COLUMN SIZE  ) has an outside diameter of 1". I need a 22.2mm or 7/8" outside diameter quill stem.

ARRGGHHHHHH!!!! I am so disappointed and frustrated with myself for not being more astute in researching this. I was so excited for this weekend to put my new bars on and getting everything situated. :(

Now i've got to source a new stem/column and return the "old". I'm having a very hard time sorting out the sizes as there are so many similar dimensions/sizes used in the different aspects of the stem/column.

OK, pity party is over.

maybe hard to find? especially one with
open faceplate.

how about going with one of these
quill adapters

Origin8 Stem MTB Quill Adapter 22 2 28 6 Black | eBay

then can use any 1-1/8" clamp-on style
stem with a 25.4 bar clamp.

I did what Saddlesores recommends, the adapter and a threadless stem. Very happy with the result.

The frame is from 1961 or 1962, as are several components. But I did not like the original bars, they were far too narrow for me, so I decided to go modern for the bars, and also did that with the brake levers and stem.

Yeah, quill stems can be confusing. The two commons sizes for quill stems are 1" and 1-1/8". The first has been used on road bikes for a long time, and older MTBs. The second was used on MTBs shortly before the industry switched over to threadless stems. What you need is called a 1" stem, even though it measures 7/8" (don't ask me why). If your new stem measures 1" outside, then technically it's a 1-1/8" stem.

So when shopping, make sure to look for something marked as a 1" stem. You could either get a quill in that size, or go the with a quill-to-threadless adapter, as others have noted.

See http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_st-z.html#stem for more info.

Ben's Cycle has Profile MTB stems, 25.4 mm HB, 22.2 mm quill in a variety of rises and lengths.

Their site makes finding stems easy. You can sort by faceplate, bar diam. and quill diam.

And, no, I do not have any affiliation with them other than buying a stem or two in the past. They have been straight up to deal with and carry good stuff so I would again in a flash.

Center tube clamp of only 7/8" is BMX standard ..(some MTB bars Of Titanium also used 7/8" tubing, since thats what the control levers Fit

But shim sleeve halves can bring that out to 1" (1/16" thick (r), X2 =1/8" as you should Know)

the next big stem bump went to 1.25" thats the new Oversize handlebar.. ( though the bars are bulged out to the center for stiffness )

As suggested above it does make sense to use a quill adapter/riser to be able to use an open face, clamp on (threadless style) stem as opposed to buying a new single piece quill stem. That way if you need to tweak the fit later with a different stem length it's a quick swap without removing brake lever, shifter and tape.

If you need to raise the height of your bars this Dimension riser will add over 3"...

Yes, the numbers are indeed confusing. You need a 7/8" OD quill to fit the 7/8" ID of your 1" OD steerer tube.

edit: I see your wrong size single piece quill stem has an open face, but going to a 2 piece riser/adapter/stem may provide more stem length choices, albeit it doesn't look as clean. Looks like that Sunlite quill stem is available in 22.2 but maybe only in silver. Make sure the bar clamp is 25.4 to match your Crazy Bars. Should it be 26 just get shims to adapt to 25.4.
