How To Plan A Tour

I have a notion to visit a bunch of friends across America via bicycle, starting the end of August. I would like to ride from Portland to SLC, on to Denver, Albuquerque, and finally Austin Tx. My question: how do I go about planning a route that allows ample camping and resources? Is there some top-secret bike-friendly road map of the good ol' US of A I am yet unaware of? How have you planned similar routes, and did you stick to plan?

Also I, as of now, do not plan on returning. I think I will wind up wherever I do. Money is imperative to living, unfortunately. How much do you spend per day/week on tour? I'm looking for a number in savings to deliver me where I'm going, then set up in a city.

Thanks all, and may Bokonon guide you to peace.

Oregon DOT has published Bike Route maps in Paper , I get a Carton of them for the LBS, they give them away , there, to touring cyclists

Write ODOT , like wise Idaho and, Other state's Transport Depts and ask a copy be mailed to You..

I've Toured Europe and the British Isles with paper maps I bought in Book shops along the way , getting a New one as I got to the edge of the one I was Using.

the electronics GPS fans will chime in soon.. if you like those battery charging required things.

There are some routes, but its usually faster to just follow the normal routing system for cars and know which states allow you to be on the interstates and restricted highways(Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, and some others) . Use Google if possible, but use your head when it comes down to it. You shouldn't come across a distance with no services longer than 100 miles (mine was 100 miles in Alaska and 60 in Kansas)
