Oceanside Washington to Eureka California tour beginning on 6/20
I'll be touring the coast north to south starting next Monday, camping the majority of the time with the occasional motel room for a day off. Say hello if you see me trudging along!

Those look like Nitto Big racks. If so, you might try mounting the front bags on the lower rail and see how it affects handling.

Surly racks, and I have run it with the front load mounted lower,handling is twitchy with panniers mounted lower. Travels great mounted where they are.Surly front racks are a bit heavier, but they offer WAY more options for moving panniers around to optimize bike handling and gives space and room to strap on groceries, ice or whatever I need to pile on while touring.

My Nitto Big racks offer the same advantage. In fact, I have only used racks with large platforms front and rear. My first set were custom jobs from Robert Beckman, but they were stolen from my house along with the LHT they were attached to.
