Should I bother getting a water filter?
I'm going to be riding about 700 miles from minneapolis to ohio...I was just wondering if anyone thinks that getting a filter would be necessary for a trip like this. It doesn't seem like it, but what do you think?

Not really necessary But watch out for where you get your water. the only time I ever got ill enough on a tour to need medical attention was from bad water I drank from a campground well. Now I only drink bottled ,boiled or municipal water while on tour.

I would not bother with a water filter. I expect you will ride through multiple towns each day and will have plenty of opportunity to get clean water. If you plan to do any stealth camping, you might consider taking a camelback or collapsible water bladder that you can fill up at the last town before you find a campsite.

You won't need it. Save some weight and just being some iodine tablets just in case. You will pass through many decent sized towns on the way and will have a lot of opportunities to fill up. If you're worried about running out of water then get a 4 or 6 litre drom bag.

Don't bother with the water filter.
And also, water is a kilo per litre. When the metric system was made, they derived the kilo as a unit by weighing one litre of water.

If you do go with a filter and use a hydration system such as a camelback then consider getting an inline filter from Seychelle.com This is what I use when hiking

Voice of dissent: I really love my MSR filter and Nalgene water bottle, and I recommend them.

For the trip you mention, I wouldn't bring a filter. I'd bring water treatment tabs or liquid. I don't like the iodine tablets, there are other types nowadays. If you do bring iodine tabs, vitamin C crystals help with the taste.
As other folks mention, you should be able to fill up along the way.
-I'd figure you might want to treat water twice (at most) for that trip. Say-if you get low between stores and fill up at a stream, which will be near the road, and PERHAPS contaminated. Or perhaps at a campground-and your not too kean on how close the water pump is to the leaching field.
Having some type of water treatment system (filter or chemical) will give you more options, especially if you want to do any hiking.
