Lake Michigan 1/2 Circle Tour on a Tandem

We just completed our very first tour!

We chose to do 1/2 of the Lake Michigan Circle Tour. We started in Manitowoc, WI, and toured clock-wise through the U.P. to Ludington, MI. We then took the SS Badger across Lake Michigan back to our car in Manitowoc and drove home to Chicago. 450 cycling miles total. The tour was tough and we got help from a few folks, including Steve from City Bikes who delivered a new tire when we had a blow out after passing through Traverse City. Enjoy pic below.

My first ever tour was in 1975, cycled counter-clockwise around the Lake starting from my home in Chicago. Passing through the South Side and Gary in those days was a real hoot. Cutoff jeans, cotton T shirt, a Schwinn Continental with a book rack and my HS gym duffle bag. I'd never even heard the word "pannier" back then, nor "chamois" shorts. Ever hear of a tube tent? Took off with $40 cash and came home with change. It was the start of a long term relationship. Michigan remains one of my favorite states. Great tour!

Would love to see your route and any changes or suggestions that you might make now that you've completed it. Strongly considering something similar in next season.

Here's a route I'd did in the spring of 2015. I did deviate somewhat but never updated my posted route, although it's pretty close. I did really enjoy touring Lake Michigan--> Yet (sorry no dis to Michigan): I was very taken with Lake Superior and I'm looking to explore more in that direction in the future.

Beach-hut I camped in on Lake Superior. Yep --> that pile-of-sticks is a hut!

Mackinac Bridge. Bikes not allowed but you can arrange for transport, $5 - Mackinac Bridge Authority.

I'd be interested in the route too. This seems like a pretty good way to spend a week or so and just a short drive from Chicago.

The Route - We just let Google tell us what to do on bike route mode. It worked basically 95% of the miles and the other 5% we used a guide book and/or scouted the Google suggested route the morning of and decided how we would deviate that day.

The Destinations:
Manitowoc -> Peshtigo
Peshtigo -> Rapid River
Rapid River -> Naubinway
Naaubinway -> Petosky
Petosky -> Traverse City
Traverse City -> Sleeping Bear Dunes
Sleeping Bear Dunes -> Ludington
Ludington -> Manitowoc

Next summer I plan to do a similar route. I will be starting in Topinabee, Michigan. I haven't decided which direction I will go. How did you cross Mackinac? How was the ferry from Ludington to Manitiwoc?

Man, Topinabee is not a name I hear frequently!

The bridge offers an on-demand shuttle service for bikes, snowmobiles and pedestrians: Frequently Asked Questions - Mackinac Bridge Authority. Alternatively, if you were planning on stopping at Mackinaw Island, you can do the ferry from one city, to the island, to the other city.
