MTB Cycletech Der Papalagi

I have a MTB Cycletech Der Papalagi touring bike that I just purchased used. It is from about 2001, I believe. I'm trying to figure out what to upgrade on it. Currently it has a mix of parts on it and I'd like to upgrade the crankset and possible bottom bracket, but don't know a lot about them. Does anyone know what to look for, as far as the size and threading for this model? Is Deore XT the way to go?

I'm planning on using this bike primarily as a gravel grinder, which it has been great for so far. Thanks. Jay

This is the spec sheet from 2008. It might give you some ideas.
