Cycling pants
 

Looking for suggestions on a pair of long pants for winter commuting rides and cold weather touring. I see lots of people wearing pants like these while touring: Pacific Trail Nylon Faille Convertible Pants (For Men) - Save 59% I'm not a huge fan of the cargo pants or convertible pant/short combo.

Until now I've just worn a pair of nylon capris with long johns and wool socks, but I think I'd like some long pants. What do you guys wear? Specific brands are appreciated.

For general cycling, I wear cycling shorts with tights, if it is quite chilly, or leg warmers if it is not.

On tour, I wear cycling shorts with stretchy capris over them ... and leg warmers if it gets cold.

I often wear technical fabric hiking pants (and some cheap synthetic ones) with cycling shorts with a chamois below them. I sometimes layer wicking fabric long and short sleeve t-shirts on top with an old ski jacket or a lined cycling jersey with an old sports reversible sleeveless jacket.

I also take elastic ties so I can fold up clothes and lash them down to my racks in spring and autumn if I am getting an early start or will get home late in colder temperatures.

I always wear bike shorts and add tights if it get cold. When that isn't enough I add a pair if light wind or rain pants over the tights.

For cold weather I wear some bike shorts under some athletic pants. Not sure if the pants are for running or for recovery or what, but they are Addidas brand and are nearly windproof. This morning it is 35 degrees (F) outside, that is what I will be wearing in about an hour.

But for touring in cold weather, I use zip off legs on my Zoic brand bike pants, long pants that convert to bike shorts and has good pockets which are useful for touring, detachable padded liner.

How cold does the PNW get?

I use them for down into the upper 30's in Michigan, when there isn't snow on the trails in the fall/winter/spring. Also took them on a tour, and wore them into the high 50's/low 60's in a drizzling rain for three days. Never had an issue with my legs getting cold or being too warm in those ranges.

REI Adventure pants. A simple layer of soft nylon, very durable, seams and zippers small/ soft enough that they ain't been a problem.

Nylon shell and Fleece Base layer ?

I wore my rain gear Trousers and Long Underwear over my Bike shorts..

Now I Got A compound Knit Poly Track suit Warm Up pants fuzzy inside , smooth Outside , I wear that year around, Russell.

Colder, I add Long Underwear..

I use Sport Hill Zone 3 XC pants for skiing and cold weather biking. They repel winds up to 35 mph and breathe well, and they have a soft feel, almost like fleece. They also fit relatively loose, not like tights.

I have 2 pair, and my original pair must be 15 years old.

I wear lycra tights or, if colder, micro fleece tights. If really cold lycra over micro fleece. That does me all winter.

Have a 5-yr old reasonably-priced pair of Novara/REI breathable rain pants that worked pretty well though I haven't used them very much. IMO would be good for commuting or touring. For commuting rain pants can cover regular work/street clothes & for touring can help on chilly and/or rainy mornings/evenings w/o hassle of tights. I don't like getting overheated & rain pants are easy to remove when temps get warmer.

I'm on my third pair of Zoic Black Market convertible mountain bike pants . They're unlined. My everyday underwater for short commutes and for longer rides and touring I especially like the Pearl Izumi padded liners. They're heavier and more durable than road shorts, tights and/or leg warmers. They are gusseted and tapered with a high spandex content so they don't flap around while riding but don't bind either. They have a lot of pockets but they are cut flat and most have zippers. On most long tours I take two pairs of the tops (shorts) and one set of the bottoms (legs) to zipper on as needed to either.

One caution, because they are both tapered, convertible and zippers don't stretch, I find a size larger than I normally wear is more comfortable, especially on really cold days when I wear leg warmers underneath.

Note: Zoic makes very similar riding pants that are not convertible.

I use the same pants but I use the Zoic liners. Instead of using the Zoic button, I bring leg straps to keep the pants out of the chain.
