We noticed that two weeks ago, too. In Ohiopyle, for example, a few businesses said they were closing after the weekend of Oct 15-16. Bonus: they gave us generous scoops of ice cream since they were closing the next day!
If you are camping, Outflow Campground in Confluence is closed for the season. It seems you can still camp there (and for free!), but there are no services (no water/toilets/etc.). |

One of the days of our ride was from just outside of Hancock to Cumberland, which is a pretty sparsely-poulated stretch. The plan was to ride about 20 miles and stop for lunch & supplies (and maybe a nice cold beer) at Bill's Place in Little Orleans - there isn't much else for a while in either direction. We rolled up, only to find a locked door with a sign that read "NEW SEASON HOURS: CLOSED MONDAYS & TUESDAYS STARTING 10/3." That was on Tuesday, October 4th :notamused:

The river is a great place for a bath. That is what I do. I hate those showers. If there is ice on th eriver then just chip it away. ;)
Downside is no bathrooms but there are a couple of restaurants in town. |

Just got back from an overnight in the Fort Frederick SP area near Hagerstown. Rode to Hancock and to Williamsport on two-track gravel mostly. We had planned on touring bikes with 32s but instead rode our mountain bikes. I had 1.95 slicks and my bro-in-law had 1.95 Vittorias. We saw several riders on road bikes and skinny tires. Good colors now.

I'm used to cold showers but doesn't the river water have some mud & algae? I'd fill up a plastic jug w/water from gas station & do a sponge bath.
Never had a problem. On a hot summer day, it sure beats remaining sweaty. |

MAK, Alan,
Thank you very much, i think my bike can have 700x40 without fenders. so i think it is around 700x32 with fenders. Looks like it won't be an ideal bike for the C&O trip. :( continental bicycle Travel CONTACT http://media.chainreactioncycles.com...id=500&hei=505 |

Hello,
1 . I am looking for a 700cx40 or similar for my trip from DC-Cumberland , would you please recommend a good pair. 2. When is the best time to go for Fall Foliage and good weather? Thank you, I rode both GAP and C&O Towpath in early May of this year. It was wet. Really wet. Of our eight days it poured on us six and a half. GAP drains so perfectly that I could have been on 23mm road tires. I even passed a few folks who were. On the C&O however, the mud pits kind of demand lower pressures and a fatter tire. That said, I rode on 700/32 Schwalbe Marathon Plus and loved them in all conditions. Really a great tire. And I never felt that I needed any more tread or girth. |
Did 40 km ride today in Northern Virginia, leaves being at spectacular peak, highlighted by the bright sun. Tree scenery actually better on some roads vs the bike paths.
