Wow, this is super lame of Surly. They completely ripped off this guy's design. He's been making those for a number of years now.

Don't know about that. It seems there are only so many ways to design the retrofit piece needed. Sure that guy didn't rip his idea from some other thing he saw somewhere, sometime?
If you gave engineering students the task of mounting two plates across two hollow tubes many would probably come up with the same sort of solution.

In the end, unless that guy planned to mass produce his product, it seems Surly has addressed an issue.

This, not to mention whether that chap had a patent filed or not. If not, its a free for all.

Only stubbornness keeps them from just telling The company that actually makes their frames, put a Kickstand plate on it ,
instead of the chainstay brace tube.

Let the customer leave off the kickstand if they wish.

I upgraded to this one..

you can actually make its length longer [try that with a hacksaw, have it grow back]

That guy who sells kits on ebay is using a different design. I printed out his instructions to modify to make one for my Fargo, though apparently LHTs don't have the derailleur cable going through that area. Doh!

I'm waffling over putting one on my LHT now. Part of me says how nice it would be to just use the stand to rummage around in my bags and such, and the other part says no - to tough it out and live in defiance.

Salsa Another QBP brand leaves the Max Way shop with a Kickstand mount

Trek 520D uses the rear stand with 2 small bolts holding it on a raised Tab, so even lighter and right under your pannier Load.

Why, that would add at least $2 to their cost!

I'll admit that their original "don't use a kickstand" blog post had me questioning the LHT design, build, and quality.

Why. A kickstand isn't necessary and is usually just extra bulk on the bike

My Soma Saga has a kickstand plate for the chainstay bridge. Never mounted one on it but it's there if I need it

Why, because the substantial fraction of people who want a kickstand on their bike would not be scare off!

They can buy a different brand bike ..
I expect Maxway TW is the factory making Salsa, Surly ... And Soma for the 2 different importers..

it's what they do..

They had a relevant point to make. Crank down on the chainstays and they will crumple. They also at least used to prescribe to the philosophy that touring bikes don't need kickstands. I honestly can't see the point of kickstands myself. Extra weight for very little extra convenience and substantial added risk to one's bike/gear.

Posted here was a Fix.. Plug the chainstay tube from the BB shell end , fill the tube with Epoxy Putty ,

that gives you a solid filled area under the KS, that will not crush, so easily..
