Guess I am lucky that way.

I usually tell friends and family that I expect to check my e-mail every few days if I have wifi. And if there is an emergency, call a specific phone number that I rarely use. That number is on the google voice system and it will send me an e-mail with an attached audio file with their voice mail that I can listen to when I have wifi.

RoadID has a nice app that does live tracking. It's free. You enter in contacts and then whenever you go for a ride, it sends a text to those contacts tell them you are riding. The text has a link to a live map of where you are. If you don't move for 5 minutes, it will send an alert to those pre-entered contacts. I don't know if you can turn that off. Then, at the end of your ride, you tap the app that you have finished and it sends your contact another text alert. When I ride with slower people, I tell my contacts that it will be a slow ride and to ignore any alerts.

I use the app all of the time when I ride by myself. Not sure if I'll use it when I tour.
