"Touring" bike on display at St Louis Public Library

https://www.slpl.org/news/25th-infan...it-at-central/

Was at our Central Library downtown and saw this display featuring a bike of the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps of 1897. This bike was used to travel 1900 miles from Missoula MT to St Louis in 1897. That would be an impressive tour today, much less 120 years ago. You can read their pack list, and compare to your own touring pack....

spyguy, I read about this in one of the bicycle magazines, I think they commemorating the 100th anniversary. Very interesting story. Thanks for posting.

Brad
That would be 120 years now.

It's a great story of man over nature, well worth a visit for anyone near St. Louis.

here's a link to more of the story.

Oops, I wasn't too clear that I'd read the article 20 years ago.

Here's a well-done documentary on this story

"The Bicycle Corps: America's Black Army On Wheels" (2000)

Tough adventure.

46 miles/day average over the continental divide on single speed!

Impressive.

Several years ago I saw a penny farthing with Ortlieb panniers. That was hilarious.

I looked for it and found two photos, but the second photo is not Ortliebs.
