You will miss NJ if you do that. If your schedule turns out such that you will be camping in the Port Jervis area, here is how you can bag NJ: From Port Jervis, head west on U.S. 209/U.S. 6 across the Delaware River into Matamoras, PA. Maybe a mile or so after you cross the bridge there is a Price Chopper grocery store on the right. Load up and head back across the bridge. Follow U.S. 6 east for a bit. Right after you cross the Neversink River make a right at the light onto S. Maple. Soon you will cross under I-84 and be in NJ, where S. Maple turns into River Rd. A little further down River Rd. is Rockview Valley Campground. It's a bit "rough around the edges," but it will do for one night, and it has a pool. BTW...That area can be very busy in the summer due to tubing, kayaking, etc., and the proximity to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area. Calling ahead to check availability is advisable.

NY 97 is a nice way to get north from Port Jervis. The Zane Grey Museum is just across the river in Lackawaxen, PA. You cross the river there via a former Roebling aqueduct.
