I honestly don't understand many "Do You Take a..." threads.

And there are a host of compact umbrellas out there that could easily fit into a pannier. Not difficult to carry at all. This random Google search result is smaller and lighter than my Bodum Travel Press mug:

You're right in that it could fit. But if I somehow put that davekny in my pannier, I'd probably have given it away, or mailed it home within the first week.

This thread reminds me of the responses of other kayak tourers in the Queen Charlotte Islands to seeing the 60 inch golf umbrella I carried. Ridicule, laughter and derision flowed until I used it as a sail on a long down wind leg and outdistanced them all easily.(This was long before kites or foils were available as a kayak "sail".) At the end of the day at camp all wanted to know how to use it and to buy one as I stood dry under it in torrential rain around a campfire. All seemed to regret their pre-judgements of this obviously ridiculous idea when they first saw it. Apparently habits and preconceived notions do not like to be challenged.
I shared the aluminized umbrella idea due to the usefulness to me in the many hot and sunny and sometimes rainy areas in the Western Hemisphere on my bike tours..

Not touring but, I frequently see this homeless guy who uses about 5-6 golf-umbrellas to fashion his nightly enclosure. It really does look to be quite effective, I've seen him sleeping soundly on his umbrella-encased bus-stop-bench in freezing-cold, rain, and snow. I've always wanted to take a picture but thought it might be too much of an invasion, he does seem to have some paranoia.

I almost went with a solar reflective umbrella at 1st. because I like everything I carry to have dual or multiple purposes, rain/sun.
