Double Tap shifters are not electronic.

OP would you consider changing the cranks to 26-40 or 28-42 in a Sram 1000 crank?

I'm running a 28-42 SRAM X5 mountain crankset up front on my Vaya and it's great for touring, but I'm guessing the OP would need to change their rear derailleur if they went down that route.

If you have used that gearing in the past you will be fine. Familiarity with what you can do with the equipment you have is the only way to find out. What works for some people may not work for others.

Even with low gearing it can be relaxing to walk up some hills & if they're short it's not a major time penalty. Going West-East vs North-South would also seem to help minimize climbing.

I toured across the USA on a Cervelo RS with a combo of SRAM road and MTB parts so they do work together.

The original set up was 50/34 x 12/25 with SRAM Rival derailleurs and shifters

I went to 48/34 up front and 12/36 at the back with a SRAM X9 10 speed long cage derailleur....it all worked fine with the Rival shifters and I had no trouble dealing with the mountains.

Given that this fellow hasnt toured before, I believe it would be a help to him if you gave him a ballpark figure of your load weight, and bike weight also, so that he will have a reference of what worked for you, who I figure is a good example of a typical rider in good shape who has lots of riding experience.

Don't forget folks, first time tourers often end up taking waaaaay too much weight, I know I certainly did and learned from it.

I put an 11-36T SRAM road cassette on. Works with Ultegra, so I am willing to bet it will work with your SRAM setup.

If that winds up not being enough, a 46/30T crank and that cassette will get you as low as the gearing on a Trek 520.

Well, after all that, I've decided to build the bike with an old triple and MTB rear derailleur I had lying around. Once I'm done with the tour, I'll put on my SRAM parts.
