Thanks for your consideration. In re carbon wheels I found that 559mm/26" carbon wheels were very expensive with marginal weight saving. 622mm/700C etc might have more options but I think weight saving would still be low. I wouldn't worry so much about carbon frame breaking. It happens, sure, steel frames can break too. My only gripe with carbon is it can limit bike's versatility. |
My 5 cent:
CX for touring: if it fits and is comfortable for you: absolutely yes, why not? Carbon frame for touring: from my point of view absolutely not. I need a bike which I can slam onto the back of a pickup, into an aircraft, train, bog, what have ya. So robustness is important for me on tour. And repairability on the road, but that does not apply so much to the frame. More to anything else (brakes, chain, gears...) I know you can weld a steel frame, but it is not so easy if you are all by yourself in the woods somewhere... |
I've yet to have any problems with a carbon frame while touring. TBH if your frame gets trashed in the middle of nowhere, it really doesn't matter what it's made out of. And unless you're running an unusually light frame, anything that'll wreck carbon is going to destroy anything else.
