Avanti Gazelle - Mid '90s Bike
I just picked up an Avanti Gazelle for a low price. It will need some mechanical love but is still rideable as is.
However, I really can't find much, if anything, about this bike. It has Shimano Alivio derailleurs front and back (3x7), Shimano cantilever brakes, trekking handlebars, 700x38c gravel tyres on 36-spoke wheels. Steel 4130 chromoly frame.
The steel frame seems quite nice (Japanese made). Haven't weighed it, but from feel I think this bike might be a touch lighter than my Surly LHT. Chainstays seem long enough for the frame size to prevent heel strike. Braze-ons front and back for racks, too. Beautiful deep green metallic paint that seems to have protected the frame quite well.
Does anyone know anything about this model of bike?

Sounds like a generic low-mid level Euro trekking bike, probably not much information to be found out about it. Being a Gazelle, I presume it was probably found in the Netherlands? They aren't all that common in the States, even if they do occasionally pop up here and there.
Clean it up and ride it!

Gazelle is a very old Dutch bike company , but is it an Avanti brand painted name on the frame, then gazelle is the model, named after the animal ?

Thanks. Avanti is the brand. Gazelle is the model.
I have found out a little about them. Avanti are a New Zealand company. The frames are manufactured in Japan and the bikes are assembled in Australia.
It would also seem (from about the only other description I could find) that the steel tubes are double butted. I'll try to post a pic some time.

dont know anything about it, but it sounds very similar to a bike I use commuting, similar age probably, similar level components, same type of frame.
Im sure its a good , useable bike.
I looked into changing mine to 8 or 9 speeds, but the rear hub is too short for 9 speed cassettes, so I just live with it at 7 and it works fine.
You could always put a newer rear wheel with 9 speed stuff on it and get some used or cheap 9 speed trigger shifters if you really want to tour with it, if not, I find 7 speed to be perfectly fine for what I use it for and the gearing is low enough for all kinds of riding.
Id regrease the hubs though, dont know if youve ever done this sort of thing, but that way youknow the grease and adjustments are good.

Avanti Gazelle
I can't tell you much about the bike but you may be interested to know that I found one being thrown out on the side of the road about a year ago. After a lot of TLC, putting on new tyres and trekking handlebars I took it to Europe and rode from Basle (Switzerland) to Nantes on the French Atlantic coast, about 1250km, without a single problem. Very happy with the bike as a tourer.
