You made the comment about time matters.

And no, hybro brake don't get sponge from sitting. That happens when there is air in the system.

Had to jerry rig it to get out, sketchy. $600 down the drain. Then dropped chain behind cassette riding gnarly double track along Usal road along Lost Coast.

I used front dyno hub to charge batteries which was cool....as long as it still worked. Never had a problem, but I also dont tour in the Andes.

Cute experiment but decided on a MTB drivetrain, but it may work for you....we all ride different and if your comfortable, cool. Id pick something simple for a big tour or offroad that I can field service.

I use carbon a lot as well...and gasp...with carbon rims and cantis.
Your failure has nothing to do with Etap. You can't field service ripped off RD whether they are Etap or not. I don't understand what you are claiming here. Yes, they do cost more and $hit happens.

Sure it does, lightweight road gear, pending where / how you ride is not always great option. I could have rigged a cable der easy and continued to ride.

Agter getting back to town replacing a fragile hard to find der in the middle of nowhere doesnt work well....not even in Palm Springs. It could have ended a long tour.

We digress though. I have Etap on my road bike, use hydro brakes on MTBs, etc...but I have no problems keeping it low tech on my tours, I know I can field service or find parts, most places.

YMMV, E-ders are slick options and they work great, just know limitations....

Do you use dyno hub to charge?
