Most Efficient Way to Acquire Dynamo Wheelset
 

I may as well get the dynamo now, while I'm shopping for a 700c/29 wheelset...
So, what's the best, most efficient way to go about this? And if it's custom builder, please refer me to one.

I'm in So Cal.

If it were me I would get a Schmidt hub from Peter White Cycles for not only the hub/wheel but also any lights or accessories.

Quality = Custom wheelbuild with your choice of rims, hubs, spokes, axles.

Depends on what you mean by efficient.

Time-efficient
Call peter white and ask if there is a bike shop in your area that has an account. Explain what you are looking for and peter white will sell exactly what you need to your LBS and they will install it on your bike. This is by far the most expensive option, but you will have an excellent set of wheels and lights and it only takes the time of a phone call and a trip to your LBS.

Cost-efficient
The way to get the best dynamo lighting setup for the least money is to source the parts and build the wheel yourself. I have been able to get dynamo hubs, lights and spokes from German online retailers for around half of what peter white charges for the same parts. Wheel building isn't really that hard if you're patient. As an example I just added dynamo lighting to my touring bike with a front wheel to match the rear wheel I already have (SP PV-8, Mavic A-119 & DT Alpine III) for around $110. I added an Edelux II headlight and a B&M Toplight Line for another $110 or so. That's a pretty good setup for around $220 considering the rear wheel I already have is perfectly fine. Peter White will charge you more than that for the hub.

A balanced approach would be to get some pre-built wheels like those IDC wheels or some of the trekking/touring wheels like this one as an examlpe from one of the German retailers and take everything to the LBS and have them install it or install it yourself.

Buy the hub, take the wheel to the shop, let them order spokes and rebuild wheel and you'll be done in no time.

I bought a dynamo for my girlfriend for Christmas, stole her wheel, got the shop to build it up, picked it up and installed it without her knowing in just a few days.

And you gain a hand built wheel in front, which is guaranteed to be more durable than the wheel in the rear of your bike.

I would have bought the hub locally but they couldn't get one.

Wheel rebuild and 32 spokes was $65.

I was looking at prowheelbuilder.com. I haven't bought from them, but it seems like a decent deal. You pick the components you want and they build it. You can get a good (Shutter Precision) dynamo wheel built for well under $300.

Check your friendly LBS.. Their Wholesale suppliers have production machines that allow them to sell built wheels for low cost,

built from their inventory of parts.. likely the hub will be Shimano. those cost less so wheel will cost less as well..
