Mickelson Trail South Dakota

Last summer I took the uphill route but this year Iím riding downhill . I need to get away from this South Texas heat, todays ride it was 101 but it was late so I wasnít in direct sunlight so it was bearable. Looking forward to the cool weather in the Black Hills. The Mickelson Trail has awesome scenery plus there is a lot to do after the ride in this area. Going to see Mt Rushmore etc etc.

I was there almost a decade ago, we did an end to end and back loop starting at the southern end at Edgemont. Near Edgemont we had virtually no shade, we baked in the hot sun. Doing that up hill was a slow grind as we gained elevation, but days later when we returned (and it was still in the 90s) the downhill was of course much faster. The middle is at higher elevation so it is cooler, plus of course much more shade. I was there during the last week of August.

Try to schedule your trip to avoid the Sturgis motorcycle rally.

Yes. Leaving on July 5 before all the motorcycles are there. Weather forecast looks great even down in a Edgemont. Last year it was 102 in Edgemont so that uphill ride was hot the locals looked at me and thought i was crazy until they saw my Texas plates but still it was a scorcher. Like you said once I got in the higher elevation it was nice and cool.
