Bike buying advice: Salsa Vaya Deore or Masi Giramondo 700c
Looking for advice on what bike to buy. I ride around the city daily, and will use it to commute, but I'd like to be able to ride some local trails and gravel, as well as some long distance touring at some point in the near future. These two seem to be good contenders for "do-it-all" bikes. I'm open to other suggestions as well. Thank you!

Masi is $1090
Salsa is $1400
Salsa has better brakes (almost positive).
Madi has more versatile gearing.
Salsa has Sora STI shifters and a compact double crank.
Masi has quality bar end shifters and a triple crank.
Those are the 3 big differences. For the cost difference, you could change the brakes and still have hundreds left over.
I'd just ride both and decide based on what feels best as the setups are so drastically different.
Couple other options

Not a tourer myself, though I do gravel rides in the 50-100 mile range on occasion...Have considered both of these bikes, I think they'd be great for that purpose.
I lean heavily towards the Masi, I really like the ability to mount two bottles on the fork. Both bikes will allow 3 on the frame, but if you want to run a large frame bag, that can impede bottle mounts inside the main triangle.
One small advantage of the Salsa is the 44mm headtube. I believe you can run a tapered-steerer fork with the right headset, and if you want to run a lot of the newer carbon forks that is handy. Maybe not a concern for you though.

I love the Giramondo geometry. It seems to fall somewhere nicely between touring and mountain bike.
Some of the components leave much to be desired though: The brakes are mediocre and the wheels only have 32 spokes (36 are better for loaded touring). I'd also prefer a 9-speed cassette (again, longer lasting and more durable), but that's only a minor gripe.
I really hope Masi address some of these shortcomings for 2019 when I'll be in the market for a new steed. I'd happily pay an additional $200-300 for better brakes and more durable wheels. I guess we'll see in a few months...

Before going on a long tour I'd probably also have a beefier 36-spoke rear wheel built. The front wheel should be fine since it doesn't support as much weight.

*To put it into sickeningly meaningless, simple terms.

Eh. On the one hand, yeah, not helpful to the topic at hand, but good for him for speaking out for what he feels is right in regards to a ****ty system. A Lot more people should do the same(and more) or things will just keep “heading in a bad direction.”*

we all get it- bike manufacturing is global and he dislikes it.
its worth a conversation if the thread topic is about manufacturing locations. Besides that though, it comes off as subtle ra....well I'll stop short of saying what I think the real motivation is.

My first thoughts are to go for the Salsa, mainly because I'm a Surly guy... does that make sense?
Truthfully, the Masi is probably as good as the Salsa, and probably made in that very same facility. To make a bike your own, you will want to add nice personal touches. For what its worth, the Masi is prettier.

I liked the Vaya geometry, but I wanted a more traditional touring bike, so I passed on it. I did not have access to the Masi, but price equipment looks reasonable.. There are various categories thrown around like gravel, hybrid, endurance, touring, and road. I have had the good fortune of trying plenty of bikes. Try other categories so you can appreciate the differences. Eventually, you’ll have deadicated bikes because you’ll demand more performance for specific uses. You’re on the right track asking questions,
