Most desirable tubing for an XL touring bike ?

I have a very nice Koga Miyata , bought used, 10 years ago..
It's frame is made in 7004 heat treated aluminum.
Its top and down tubes custom drawn are not even round..
Hydroforming reshapes aluminum to be optimized for the stresses
the tube join may see.
Trek 920 , a 29er, with racks comes in XL (21-22.5"/59-62cm)
(nearby LBS is a Trek Dealer)

Titanium. I love my Kona Rove TI. Remember that the wheels can make or break the ride as well. Had a Litespeed with crappy wheels and it rode very poorly. Wasn't the frame.

I can vouch for the Lynskey Backroad....... I am a full sized 270lb rider, and I am not sure the bike even knows when I am on it. With racks and fenders, it feels 1/2 the weight of my Long Haul Trucker. Ti vs 4130. If you can get it on sale, go Ti.

The Aurora elite with Reynolds 631 has piqued my interest, but not finding much current info in searches. That has to be the lowest priced bike with 631 at $1700. I also like the specs on the base Aurora and wonder if anyone has used Alex ace rims. They look better than any other sub $1000 touring bike, but I don't see Jamis mentioned near as much as Windsor, Fuji and REI.

Definitely looks like the real deal-- even got fenders? I'd go light as possible so racks on the front wouldn't be needed by me but 36-spoke wheels is definitely the way to go... at least on the rear. Pretty hefty road meats from my experience but that seems to be the trend... you could always go lighter, e.g., maybe a 28 on the front and a 32 on the rear. I'd be tempted to buy one myself it it had a taller head tube and longer wheelbase.

Well Windsor and Fuji are basically the same thing. And you see them mentioned most because they’re cheap. People like cheap things. You certainly don’t see them mentioned a lot because they’re the best, or even close(not that they’re terrible). REI just has a mass following of middle class white people, not because of their bikes being amazing(they have some decent offerings) Personally, I wouldn’t measure a bike on those standards. In any case, Jamis has a decent reputation. I would be comfortable buying a Jamis. I think it would be better than a Fuji and comparable to an REI bike at a lot lower price. I’ve ridden one Jamis(road bike, not touring) and it was a totally decent bike. If you can test ride one, definitely do that before purchase. I throw this response out as more of a “don’t worry about Windsor or REI” than a sales pitch for the Jamis. I bet it’s a good bike, and the Fuji is a good value if budget is your concern.

36-hole double eyeleted rims and Shimano Deore hubs provide increased durability for miles of trouble-free riding.

Sorry, maybe I worded that poorly. When I said don’t worry about the Fuji or REI bikes, I meant in relation to your comment earlier when you said you see lots of reviews or whatever for them, but not much for Jamis. I meant don’t worry about/concern yourself with the fact that you see lots of reviews on the Fuji or REI bikes but not the Jamis. I agree that there are probably some upgrades in the Fuji that would help it a lot. That’s part of the reason it’s one of the cheapest touring bikes.

My mistake on the Fuji rims. The only real flaw in the Fuji touring for me is the max tire width, which I'm told is 38mm. The Aurora may not be any better in that regard. I test rode a Fargo yesterday and really liked it, so my list of contenders is expanding. I even considered a carbon frame briefly, which was not even a possibility a month ago.
