And if cool, rain pants, full finger gloves, helmet cover, perhaps shoe covers, etc. Wrap around glasses that are not darkly tinted sunglasses can be nice too, perhaps with a yellow tint?

This! A thousand times this!

Mind you it helps if it's not freezing!

thats how I am always prepared, but hey, lets face it, it still is pretty crappy for a planned trip to have mother nature decide to put in a whole bunch of junky weather.

last summer, we were very lucky with a month long trip, in the 2 or 3 weeks before the start, the weather had been rain rain rain, cold and more rain. Even causing flooding, but thankfully it finally ended and it was only cold for the first week or so.

realistically, if it had been like that for our planned time, I would have looked into just arriving anyway and taking a train to more southern France, but given we had flights booked etc, theres more incentive to come up with a solution because we would be going to Europe nonetheless.

Ive always had the view also that if crappy weather is really an issue, you just improvise and go somewhere else, the internet is such a handy tool for all of this stuff , especially for just having a such more accurate idea of current and upcoming weather, not to mention being able to find train schedules etc etc.

Adolescent troll..

If you're not an adolescent, nor a troll..then act like it.

Or, as other have suggested, seek counseling.

UK has the rainy reputation but Washington DC average annual rainfall of of 102cm/40" is only a bit less than Cardiff Wales' 115cm/45" & quite more than London. & 2018 poured 160cm/63" on DC. & Wash DC is hardly the rainiest city in eastern US. OTOH UK generally has more rainy days though.

As many other cyclists in upstate NY and surrounding environs have observed, rainy weather has been steadily on the increase here and dry, sunny days are becoming less & less frequent. Last summer was almost a complete bust. This observation is supported by the meteorologists, many of whom blame climate change and a warming north Atlantic. I don't get angry at those around me, but I do find myself considering relocation to someplace where I can expect more than one or two fair weather biking days per week.

Still cloudy and rain, but need to get something done.
The question is; how to deal with this disappointment and not to take it out on somebody, something, somewhere, somehow?

I guess that is the way it rolls when you love an outdoor sport.
It it has been said you need to seek counseling I would be upset as well after planning for a period of time then the weather doesn’t cooperate I realize you are not seriously going to harm somebody Jeeez. I have had many fishing trips ruined by weather and it is disappointed. I planned on a good week of training and the forecast calls for rain everyday that is just how it goes sometimes.

In DC area the 2019 spring weather has been quite nice, avg rain, so maybe upstate NY will dry up a bit in a while. I used to live out west, all those sunny days got boring after a while, heh.

I hope so, but so far it's been a rainy spring and the forecast for the next week isn't very good. The observations I mentioned concerned a trend that's been in place for the last few years, and appears to be getting worse. I don't think I could ever get tired of sunny days, but of course, some rain is necessary for foliage and water supplies etc. Thanks for your optimism though!

Of the 12 days, I was home, 3 days did not rain. Not a complete failure, I did some MTB, hiking and saw some family and friends, so not a complete waste.
Let's hope the next planned trip pans out.
Thanks for the input.

And if anyone needs some advice on what to do on a rainy day...

The odd part about some of the comments is that people haven't been employed in a climate that can actually (a) reduce the ability to work to nothing for the entire day or longer, and (b) mean no money payable to someone who is casually employed and unable to work.

Having spent over a decade in the farming industry and/or working in the outdoors, I have a fair clue about what I say. Let alone the couple years I created and ran a bicycle hire and tour business.

I am glad you have mentioned the fishing trips, too. Wind and rain together or separate can be downturns for that.

Organising a bike tour and being confronted by bad weather can be challenging without a doubt. But is handy to plan it with some challenge like that in mind. Often places to be visited have other things that can be explored or done without riding, and it is a useful way meet new people, have a chat for a while, and find something to do with them indoors.

there are various ways to approach rainy forecast. As others suggested, grab your internet device and research where the good weather is and head that way.

.... or instead of camping, spend a few extra dollars, maybe shorten your daily distance and arrive every day in a nice warm hotel with hot tubs and sauna etc ....

.... or invest in a good rain gear, good tent for rainy days (hilleberg) and head out laughing at the gods ;-

Yes, when it rains the grass will grow and that is free food for my cows. Agriculture people around here will sit in the barn and swill beer when weather won’t allow work. I guess you can say that is a form of socializing The downside is 2 days worth a pay a week because the other 4 were unproductive due to weather.

Perhaps I spoke too soon, today starts a rainy week here & what's most unsettling is the south wind which was near constant last year, full of Gulf moisture. Plus, up north the Great Lakes add in their contribution. OTOH prev to 2018 the last really damp summer in DC area was ~15 years ago, drought has been more common here.

Out west you get all that sun glare when commuting, ya' can't wash your car or water the lawn, skin & hair get dry, can't cook when camping, goat's-head thorns etc. Fewer roads so local routes can get boring.

Good point. In super-rainy 2018 the local DC media gave little coverage to the effect on agriculture, construction & tourist business. At the end of the season they claimed the local beach business hadn't been that bad but I'm not sure that was really true.

I feel now would be a good time to repost this picture from a September trip that I had hoped would see an Indian summer but caught the remnants of a tropical hurricane instead:

Well you can watch the Giro on tv (US folks gotta pay extra price to see). Rain has caused a lot of problems for the race, IMHO the old June Giro made more sense. Plus for rainy days they should mandate 38mm-wide tires & fenders, safer & cleaner!

Honestly, I get upset at myself and the situation whenever I can't go out and ride. The last big ride event I was supposed to go on was a double-whammy. It got rained out but, even if it didn't, I hurt my back. No way would I have been able to ride 60+ miles with a hurt back. I was definitely upset.

What helps in times like that? Meditation. Simply taking some time to just breathe and be in the moment. Yes, things will happen that will cause you to be unable to ride your bike...but there will be other days. Just be in the present moment and understand that. Be aware of your frustration and anger and just let it pass. I know that sound like a bunch of BS but, honestly, it's as real as it gets. When in doubt, get Zen with it!

I had to cut a trip in northern WI last month for snow scares/ice remnants. In its stead I went to southern MN and dealt with rain for 2/3 days. This year I'm just shrugging off the rain riding because otherwise there'd be no riding at all.
