1991 Cannondale ST1000
 

I’ve been on the hunt for one of these for years. I was finally able to get one the other day. Completely original down to the tires and bar tape. Pics are as found, plans are to change the grip shifter to barends, new tires, cables and bar tape after a complete service on all the bearings. Looking forward to spring.

Previous owner nailed the color scheme!

It’s all stock, completely original.

Isn't it rewarding to find something you've been looking for for such a long time and then one shows up in the condition you had hoped for. Was it a case of actively pursuing it, or just a back burner thought casually looking from time to time? I have a specific bike I'm looking for too.

I stopped an older lady last year and asked if I could take a picture of hers (pictured). She said she bought it new and was looking for a more upright replacement as it was too difficult for her to lean over any longer.

I have an SM600 but never ride it. It'll be gotten rid of as soon as the weather warms up.

Gripshift was all the rage in the '91 catalog!

I do not think I ever saw a new bike with drop bars that came with grip shifters before. That is really interesting.

If those are the original Cannondale Overland Panniers, why would someone have removed the manufacturer label off of them? My black ones have red cord on each zipper pull.

I had the 1992 model which I rode on two trips across USA (1992, 2001), across Canada (1997), up the Atlantic Coast (1998) and down the Pacific Coast (1998). I think I reached 44 states on that bike (all except KY, AR, TN, WV, MO, OK) and all Canadian provinces/territories except Nunavut which was added in 1998 after I finished the others.

The bike frame eventually cracked near left chainstay near Shark Bay Western Australia, on a 2001 trip around Australia - in part due to misuse of having bike shop in Broome put in a wheel with too wide spacing.

I always found the ride to be among the most comfortable of my bikes. By the time it completed a nine-year life, many components were replaced as they wore out. Grip shift worked fine, but eventually was replaced with bar end shifters.

Re those grip shifters, funny but I have no recollection of ever seeing those up here. Maybe they didn't sell them like that here, or maybe there were very few sold, or maybe it just wasn't on my radar, who knows?

thinking about it, when I was seriously looking at touring bikes in 90, 91, I certainly don't recall seeing cannondales with those shifters in stores, I think they would have stood out to me..... again, who knows.

I just remember the cannondales being the top and coolest frames then, but a bit pricey for me at the time.

I just looked at the specs and very similar to my old touring bike. 13-30 7 speed, same, this one has a 50/42/28, mine came with 50/40/28, changed to 24 early on.
This must be a narrower rear hub too, I guess 126 or whatever it was back then.
Would it be easy to change it to a 8 speed cassette, is the freehub wide enough, given that you are going to put on new shifters anyway?
Then you get into changing to smaller rings on the crankset, but I guess it depends on what you want to do with the bike, use it touring or keep it as a pristine original sort of object.
I guess it does have value as a "window in time" sort of object, but to me, putting smaller chainrings on it will make it a lot more useable as a touring bike, and if possible going to 8 speed could be nice too and would open up possibilities of cassettes, although I guess the 11-32 is the still very available 8 spd one.
I'd certainly be keen on putting a mtb triple on it, or even 48/36/24 or thereabouts range.

Right now I have 50/40/24, I’m going to leave it for awhile and see how I like it.
