Back then I filed them off but today I would use my belt sander and just grind down the plastic spikes. I removed them so I could get my shoe out of the clips when pedalling. I had a habit of putting my foot in the cage and then coasting while reaching down to tighten the strap. When it came time to stop I either planned ahead and loosened the strap or just yanked my foot back and hoped for the best
Remember though, they are quite slippery if left as flat plastic soles.

okay....taobao has sambas in my size for $25.
but max size is 46, and interwebs says they run a size small.
and they have velosamba..........for $125. ouch.
shopping is fun in world's factory floor.
hardest part is finding my size, and shoes that either
aren't neon day-glo, or left & right shoes different colors.
found some similar chinese brand non-cleated indoor football shoes
for...............$7.50 (and free shipping).

For what it's worth, I've been using Superfeet inserts in my light weight trail runners for years now. They provide some stiffness for pedaling, as well as for walking on rocks. The inserts cost as much as the shoes, but they outlast many pairs of shoes.

so.......taobao shoes, severely limited by size availability...
got this nifty $18 pair first. look snazzy, with velcro straps, advertised as a cycling shoe,
but the soles were softer than dollar store flip-flops. purely style over substance.

followed the advice of our resident shu-ru's, ordered a cheap pair of $7 soccer turf shoes, no spikes.
cheap chinese carp, but good enough for cycling. fit well, and the soles are stiff enough for riding
on large platforms with toe-clips and straps. 2-hour ride this afternoon, no hotspots and breathable.

It depends. My take:
A. Japan: Keen Sandals on platforms.. lots of things to stop at and walk around. Many temples and other shoes-off situations. Warm weather.
B. England: Regular shoes & toe clips. Frequent stops for walking around places.
C. Western USA. SPDs. Huge riding distances between stops. Optimize for efficiency.
