C&O canal

Just wanted to let yall know I'll be biking 60-70 miles of this route between Washington, DC and Harpers Ferry, WV with my old roomie this weekend. (both ways, so 120 total). Notable stops include Georgetown, DC, Great Falls, and Maryland Heights. This is my first overnight "tour", so I am quite excited. Taking along a tent and some basic equipment; planning to just buy food along the way. Anyways, leaving this thread open for helpful suggestions, or just an encouraging word or two :). Oh yeah, and anyone here done this trip before??

I rode 4 days from DC to Cumberland with a group a few years ago. Campgrounds are every 10 miles once you get out of the DC area. Each campground is an open space with a porta-potty and a hand pump for drinking water (the water is treated with iodine). There are no trashcans in the park, but trashbags are provided at the campsites. The campsite at Point of Rocks is right next to railroad tracks, so it can be noisy even at night. It doesn't sound like it'll rain before your trip, but if it does the towpath gets really muddy. You do have to take a detour off the path around Great Falls. If you have time, you can take ferry across the Potomac at White's Ferry that goes to the Leesburg, Virginia area. You can also get burgers and sandwiches there. Snacks are available at Great Falls. Brunswick is the biggest town near the path after DC, and has some restaurants. Point of Rocks has one or two grocery stores, but that's about it.
