Wasn't sure where to post this: General, Bike Mechanics, here? Bernhard Rohloff has passed away.

Love my E-14 system, thanks Bernie you will be sorely missed. In 27 years the industry could only squeeze out about 4-5 more gears on a rear derailleur and still hasn't gotten to 14 and you were there all the way back in 1996. (not ranting about derailleurs or turning this into an argument just making a little joke)

This belongs kinda in all of those categories and more. He was a great inventor who made a super innovative product that has stood the test of time.

It seems there was a bit of nominative determinism at work, given his name sounds like 'roll off' .

Not only is it easy to roll off the tongue, but it enables riders of touring bikes to more easily roll off on their merry way.
