Posting a decent picture to the forum?

How do you best put a decent photo in your post. The picture I posted in my last new thread looked horrific.

I HAve the same problem, to get them inder 100k, I make them smaller. But then the quality goes.
Cheers Brian & Sue

What makes them horrific? Are they grainy or too dark?

Terrible resolution and blurry. Most likely caused by reducing the image by large amount. I noticed that some people posted there photos into then text message, while others have them as attachments. The photos I saw that were inside the message body looked better. I haven't been able to figure out to put an image in the message body.

I did figure out on my own that if I take a photo using the lowest resolution possible and then attach it, it looks better.

Here's how you do it. Get a free account at www.imageshack.us
You post your images(up to 1mb) and they automatically build the links for you. Then, you just copy/paste the image in. This way, it automatically comes in full size too, no thumbnail to click. I grab the link for "forums", cuz that's what this is.

Here's an example of what it looks like:

if you are on a PC, get this freeware app:
http://www.virtualzone.de/resizer/
to resize your big pics

if you have a mac (yea!), do a google for Freephotoconverter

I can easiy reduce pics from 1MEG (digipic) to 50-70K with no loss of quality

Nice Looking FG!

ht001 08-20-05 04:35 PM

Thanks, though I must sheepishly say that it's a single speed. I went the cheap way on the conversion. Would have had to buy a new hub to do fixie. Still, I love it!

I'm not a FG/SS aficionado myself, but you do have to appreciate the clean look!

Ohhh... and the background ain't half bad either! (Where is that BTW)

P.S. What kind of HB is that? Is that a bullhorn?

I've got a few tricks for image sizing!
(bear in mind, I'm using WindowsXP)

1) right click, "send to...mail recipient" - then select a smaller size when it offers to resize (640x480) 90% of the time that does the trick.

2) failing the image resize, Photoshop: open and re-save with higher compression. I try JPG first (it's usually pretty good) and then adaptive GIF if JPG fails. Actually, I've never had to resort to GIF as long as I can remember. Even JPG at "LOW" quality looks pretty good.

BIG ISSUE: cropping! Get it tight or you'll lose detail.
Good source images help a lot. Focus, saturation, exposure and framing. Cropping's easy later but if the data isn't there, it'll never look wonderful.

Here's a few samples! :)

I guess it depends on what kind of photo software you are using and how much you compress the file/picture. I can post an 800x600 pic reduced down to about 50k that looks decent. Here's one that I recently posted. I don't think the pic quality came out too bad. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=132009

Or you can use a third party website to host your photos like ht001 mentioned above.

As for cropping and re-sizing, among other things, the only image processing software I use is Photofiltre, a free download software.

Got a new one for you that's free and blows all the rest away:
"GIMP"

No, really.

Stands for "GNU Image Manipulation Program" - totaly open source, available for multiple platforms...
comparable to Photoshop!

Info here: http://www.gimp.org/
And the Windows download here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

Highly recommended.

no thumbnail to click
I prefer when there's a thumbnail to click, especially when there are many pictures. Think about us on dial-up and small screen. Image Shack also prefer thumbnails. Fromtheir site:

However, in order for ImageShack® to continue providing free image hosting, we ask that you use clickable thumbnails whenever possible.
