Touring Bottom Bracket Touring Length
 

I am going to use a Sugino XD2 600 crankset on my touring bike. The bike will have a 135mm spacing in the back and will have 700cc wheels mounted with an XTR cassette.

According to Rivendell's website to use this crank on a road bike I need a spindle length of 107 or 110, and to use it on a mountain bike I should use a spindle length of 113 or 115.

So, which should I use? It's a mountain bike spacing in the back, and I'm going to run a mountain cassette so I guess either 113 or 115. I'd just like to know for sure.

Go with the longer spindle to keep your chainline in check.....

If there is one thing I find really annoying about Shimano, Sram, and that Campy fellow.... is that no one will make a great 7 (or even 8) speed
system so you can have a low Q. I have a terrific titanium bottom bracket ( about a 107 or 108) that the fixie guys would just drool over. It'd fit their bikes perfectly. And it would provide better pedalling than the newer and wider systems. And stronger wheels, and more longevity in gears and cranks, and a microspcopic increase in pedalling smoothness.

With all those advantages, you'd think somebody would make
a gear system that was better instead of more.

You could shim the rear to get the equivalent of 130mm, and use a slightly narrower spindle, but I don't have the experience to get specific, or even to know if it's possible. I wonder if I could take a
LHT and cold set it to a narrower standard?
