You may want to do a search of the forums. It is a common thread. Some people have a separate room in their tent for their bike.

I travel very light. I use a hammock so my bike sleeps outside. I take off the panniers and put them under the hammock. The handlebar bag comes with me inside as that contains the items of value (cards, passport, camera et al).

I tie a pastic bag over the saddle and lock the bike to an immovable object such as a tree. I works well for me. The only part that you come in contact with except for the bars is the seat and it remains dry even in a monsoon.

If I'm in the middle of bfe (which is where I prefer to camp) I don't lock my bike. However, if I'm in a park or campground or close to a town I do lock my bike to whatever I can find.

I've never had any problems with anyone messing with my bike or my stuff. But, I have had some sleepless nights just worring about it! Now I carry my lock. It helps me sleep better at night. My $3.69 worth.(mark-up, just like the gas prices!)
