Surfboard trailer?
 

hi,
my girlfriend and i are thinking of touring new zealand next year for a while, and were looking at the possibility of carrying two surfboards (shortboards) with us. we would obviously need a trailer for that task. i was wondering if somebody knows of a company that makes such trailers, or has anybody ever tried to build a custom trailer? any advice on this?

Maybe a BOB with a custom made rack to hold the surfboards up above the rear wheel?

I hate to think what it would cost to fly with a bike and surfboard and trailer! Unless you plan on using those surfboards a lot maybe better to rent at the beach?

I've built trailers. You don't need much for carrying a few boards, whether it is practical is another mater for you to judge. People trail canoes, so SBs ought to be OK. Northern Hydrolics sells spoked wheels for thick axels, so does Lee Valley in their gardening section. You would need an axle, and then the towbar.

They appear to be using the wheels I mention above, though you could use BMX retreads. The frame here supports both sides of the axle, and is of a comon type. This does not require the heavy axle.

Not a trailer, but Xtracycles I believe are good surfboard carriers.

I saw one at the beach, it looked like it had a lot of cargo space.

There are companies that build canoe trailers that are towed by bicycles. Can't come up with any names as I write this, but a quick search should get you results.

I have a trailer at home that was originally designed for hauling surfboards. I can't remember the name right now but it is a single wheel trailer that attaches to the seatpost rather than the dropouts. This puts it up high with a luggage bag under it. I'll check the name later.

What about one of those surfboard carriers that attaches to the bike itself, and holds the board parallel to the frame? I've seen a lot of homemade ones from PVC pipe and duct tape.

The trailer is a Wheele. You might be able to find them on-line but I don't think they have been made for a while.
