That is an excellent question but I have no answer. I have noticed by going to LBS that there are two different colors referred to as "black cherry pearl." There is the one I have with photos referenced above which has metallic flakes in it (I am calling that First Generation and I think it is what Surly was referring to when they said, "we won't be doing this again, it was a real PITA.")

Then there is second generation which is aproximately the same color but lacks the flakes and therefore does not have that "sparkle" in the light.

Call AEB and refer them to my picture at:

https://www.pbase.com/jblish/image/57375303

and ask them which it is. Problem is if they have not seen both they might not be aware of the difference. When I got mine I was told that there were 11 (frames total) in that metallic color. I didn't get it directly from Surly but I got it from owner of an LBS here in Minneapolis who used to work with Surly / QBP (who are down the street in Bloomington) and my understanding is that he still rides with those guys and they see each other a lot. That is why I called him to get it for me - I was pretty sure he could get one of the metallic ones.

Good luck and the color is not that important in my perspective. You will be happy with what you get.

I'm not sure which it is that I have. The place where I ordered it from only specified "red" for the colour, so who knows. I got mine in April.

Here is what it looks like: https://www.pbase.com/sebastian82/image/59873996/

From this image, it appears to have far fewer sparkles than Kogswell's but that's because I was standing about 10 feet away from the bike when I snapped it. Up close it looks almost the same with maybe a bit less sparkle, but that could be from mine being a bit dirty, or factory variation, or whatever.

I gotta agree though: get any LHT, you'll love it regardless of the paint.

Hi Sebach and LHT Lovers Everywhere,

Please excuse this way too long response which is that way because I have cut and pasted info from the Surly Blog to help folks determine which generation Dark Cherry Pearl they have.

Also, I think Sebach got a First Generation (with metallic sparkle) by looking at the photo but I can't be sure enough to offer to trade with him if I am mistaken.

History of this, taken from Surly is:

On Monday, Feb 20, Surly Blog said:

We're offering two colors in the Long Haul Trucker framesets this year to replace the Sage Green color. The new colors are Utility Blue and Black Cherry Pearl.

While the Utility Blue colored frames look good and have been slowly tricking into stock, we still have not finished the Black Cherry colored frames. This specific color of paint has been a pain in the ass to work with and it looks like we may only get one or two production runs out of it. We do not yet have ETAs on this Black Cherry color and once they are gone, it will be replaced by another to-be-determined color later this summer.

So if you're waiting for this Black Cherry color frameset, please be patient and we'll keep you up to date on it's availability. Chances are they will sell very quickly once they arrive. This blog is the most efficient way to find out their status. Thank you.

On Monday March 6 Surly Blog said:

Speaking of frame colors, sizes 52-58cm of the Dark Cherry Pearl colored Long Haul Trucker framesets should be in stock tomorrow. But here is the deal, we've had a hell of a time dialing in the paint on these suckers, so it's likely the next batch or so will be a slightly different color. I only say this to protect our asses from some tweaker (you know who you are) calling us up saying "I ordered a Dark Cherry Pearl and I got a Darker Cherry Pearl". But trust me, as soon as I saw this color today the first thing I thought of was buying one myself with a new set of silver Nice Racks and some fancy silver parts. JUST A GORGEOUS COLOR!!!

Here is where it sucks for you, the only color sample we have of these is on the LHT frame page of this website, scroll over the picture of the complete Utility Blue frameset and look in the lower left corner of this image. That's all you get, a measley little teaser to look at. By the time we'd get this frame shot through the photobooth and onto the website, they'll be sold out.

I know it, I'm killing you, or boring you, whatever. Just trust me on the color, it's gorgeous and they will sell before many of you read this. More coming soon after in other sizes.

I ordered mine at 11 a.m. on March 8 and my LBS handed it to me that same day about 6 p.m. Not a big deal when you realize Surly World Headquarters is just down the street in Bloomington but thanks so much to them for getting it.

That's it. I cut and paste all that just so you can make of it what you will rather than having to rely on my memory of what was said. In my opinion everyone wins who gets one of any color. Cheers.

AEbike is also a QBP dealer, located across the lake in Michigan. The next batch of red LHT's will be available in june and I have a feeling they will look a little different. I got mine a few weeks ago and it has the metallic flakes.

Kogswell - I see you're already familiar with Hiawatha, so I'm sure you know Jim can build you up and wheel you'd like and he has the generator hubs in stock.

Can someone post a link to a pic of the current version of the dark cherry pearl LHT colour? I have seen pics of two different cherry LHTs, but I can't seem to get it straight which was the first colour and which colour is available now.

thanks,

Vik

Picked mine up on March 8. I call it the first generation, but I just made that up.

I don't have any pictures of the one with less sparkle but I saw one in a bike shop.
