Building Up Novara Safari Frame

I picked up a Novara Safari frame for next to nothing and would like to build it up into a simple XC MTB. I'm not going to race it or do any big stuff on it. I mainly want to build it up for fun and have an extra all terrain bike (w/ front suspension) for when I have company. I know its a touring frame, but the geometry is very close to my Kona MTB.

I'm posting this in the touring section as I am really looking for information on this frame. Does anyone heer happen to know what year this Safari frameset is from? Anyone know what componentry came with it (8/9 speed, etc)? Thanks in advance.

I tried to attach a picture of the frame, but for some reason the attachment button is not working for me (though the permissions state that I should be able to). The frame is old gold in color, with a blue iguana character painted on the top rail. The Novara name is outlined in dark red with the letters filled with a white cross-fiber pattern. Hope this makes sense (and I can figure out what's wrong with the attachment feature).

That's a nice looking frame!
Did you get it at an REI garage sale? I got a new-in-box Novara Randonee frame at an REI garage sale a couple years ago for $15.

I had a Safari, it was grey' but didn't have the nifty iguana on it. It was an 8 speed. I personally didn't care for the ride of the aluminum frame, but it's a nice bike. I sold off my Safari frame. I still have the fork and it's on my Randonee now (the 13" Randonee I have takes 26" wheels).

ENJOY!!

Yep. REI Garage Sale. I was told it was a 15 inch frame, but the frame was not marked. The seat tube is the same height as that of my 18 inch Kona, but the top tube is about an inch shorter.

Unless you have a lot of spare parts lying around it might be cheaper just to buy a complete mtn bike.
