anyone cycled cusco-maccu pichu?

hello hello

I'm planning to cycle the length of south america- the old ushuiaia bogota run (or quito if we get bored/ scared!). I'm looking for advice on getting to maccu pichu. I'd love to avoid getting the tourist train, but can't work out form the maps how do-able the path is...
anyone done it and know?

-just how scary is the river crossing?
-does the length of time between trains get you through the train tunnel?
-do you end up having to joing the inca trail and pay a fee?
-can we securely leave our stuff when we get to maccu pichu itself?
-does oliantambo live up to its name?

Any advice on this would be really welcome! cheers.
