Tire Size: 700x28 vs 27"x1 1/4"
Hello all!
I'm considering replacing the badly worn wheels on my Trek 620 touring bike. I do light touring - MS 150, Tour de Cure, century rides and long recreational. I ride mostly on paved, smooth surfaces but also ride on hard packed limestone. I have the opportunity to purchase a pair of Sun CRT 16 II rims that come with 700x28 tires. The wheels are built for touring, with 36 spokes in 4x lacing and the hubs are Suntour Sprint sealed, bearing hubs. I've always used 27 x 1 1/4 tires on my old Mavic (sp) Safaris. The Mavics are similarly laced. Could you all please weigh in on the difference (other than size, obviously) in terms of performance, handling and comfort between the two sizes. Will the 700x28s be good for the type of riding I do? Will I have any clearance issues with my cantilever brakes?
Looking forward to hearing from you all - and thanks in advance.

I think I know what you're talking about. Gartor 28s are, to me, are very similar to 1-1/4s. 23s are much like like 1-1/8s. Despite the numbering, 25s seem closer to the 1-1/4s than 1-1/8s. I like a 28 for a rear tire and a 25 for a front tire.
However, Gators are high pressure (110) and may be a little more petite that some other brands. For a "big" road tire--like the old Specialized Expedition tires (1-3/8s)--I think you'd be looking at a 32c tire.

Often the brand and model makes more difference than the marked size. Some size 32mm tires feel light, fast and supple. Some size 28mm tires feel heavy, dead, and slow. Don't worry about the size. Pick the model that has the balance of toughness, durability, and comfort that you need. I've been happy with the Continental Top Touring. The Panaracer Pasala is a highly rated tire, but was too tight a fit for my particular rims.

I would go for the 700c size due to the fact that you might have a hard time getting 27" tires at smaller bike shops. Wal-mart has 27" tires but they stay sold out all the time so you cant relay on that option while out on a tour. Any bike shop is going to have 700c tires.
