Riding Across America
 

hey guys

I'm planning on riding my bike across the country starting in May from Seattle WA and then heading east to maybe Philadelphia, Washington or Boston. Anyway, I'm looking for someone to do it with. Nobody I know is crazy enough to do it with me. Please send me a message if intrested.

You are a year early for me - retirement coming up. I am a little suprised at the May versus a June time frame for a west to east route. My family think I am crazy to, but I going alone if I have to. Any chance you would want to do a north to south in 07 and 08 for the across the country trip? Mike

Yeah this year really works well for me. Im graduating from college for my undergrad and going back to grad school next fall so after that, I have no idea as to my plans that year. Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm... The wife and I will be doing east to west next year, can't ride with you but we wave when we pass!

Did some of that route last year (I cut through NY). Same reason to (grad college, the grad school)

Adventure cycling missed a few things, but teh N. Tier route is very nice. Strangely enough, eastern Montana is a highlight not to be missed.
Also, cut through WI on the rail trail rather than going through Iowa (I can give some routing advice). Much coolers as Wisconsinites love cyclists.
And if you don't visit the biek shop in clark fork, ID, you're missing out. the owner is awesome!
For start time, note that i got snowed on Memoral Day weekend on Washinton/Rainy Passes.
Oh and my key advice I learned, its the juourney, not the destination. Don't be afraid to risk not making it be really seeing the sights.

I bet if you leave Seattle and follow Adventure Cycling's Northern Tier, you'll run across people going your direction. You'll certainly run into many going the opposite direction which will give you stories to share to each other & some companionship.

Also, i did it solo. Its definitly harder to go solo, but it has its rewards. You really get to think about stuff and can really do what you want. its a very real option and if you can't findsoem one to go, don't let it deter you from going. Bring a cell and be careful, and you'll do just fine.
The only place I ever wished I'd had someone with me was in indiana. Y'all have some scary ass hicks, no offense.

I think if you really want to do it while it would be great to ride with others I also think that if you are able to create that window of opportunity for yourself to be able to do it in the first place I would just plan on doing it and maybe closer to the time riding partners may materialize but even if they don't just go ahead. If your using maps by Adventure Cycling I wouldn't be surprised if you met other people along the way.

A solo trip will be a life changing experience. Just because you are riding solo doesn't mean you will be alone much. A journal during your trip would be a treat for us.

We are in the planning stages of riding across America. Thinking about doing one of the Adventure Cycling routes (Northern Tier, Transamerica or Western Express). Probably do it on our tandem. Probably end of May to beginning of July. Going west to east.
