I use Google earth quite a lot before I go to see the terrain, habitation, as well as distances involved.

a brilliant piece of software.

I just wish it was all high resolution, half way through some roads in the UK it is low res and you can't zoom in.

and sometimes I just visit places where my friends are touring so I can see where they are, and "join in" on the trip.

Or if someone has a route like the other day

"the highway to the sun" in glacier park I went and had a look for it on Google earth.

would be good if we could share KMZ files here as attatchments.

A KMZ file is a google Earth script, if you have a KMZ google earth will "fly" to the location

if you have google earth installed

look on the web for KMZ files and seeone in action, there are loads out there.

there are KMZ's for the places , like the Pyramids of Giza or mistakes in google earth, like one for a large earwig crawling over the lens, or for aeroplanes flying etc etc

I have some KMZ's for places in Patagonia to save me looking for them every time.

How do you get G.E. on a crackberry? Do you really mean Google Earth (an honest to Gawd application which must be downloaded and installed) or do you mean maps.google.com (a web site)? If the former, how/where? And what model crackberry?

But that is no there is it.

KMZ is not one of the allowable attatchment extensions.

which are bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip

I know we could post with a txt extension and tell people to change the extension to KMZ,or put it in a zip, but that is not the same as just posting a KMZ ( or KML) a say look here for a good route start, finish, place to look at etc.

I haven't used it recently, but I have heard it has improved quite a bit. The last time I used any of Google's mapping software, it was cumbersome and not intuitive ... and it only had detailed information for the US rendering it almost completely useless.

Hopefully the rumors that it has improved are true. Maybe one day I'll take another look at it.

For what little it's worth, I prefer the clunky ol' Delorme Topo, at least for US routes. Elevation stats pwn....

Ah.... I didn't realize that you wanted to share them HERE (at bikeforums.net). As a kludge, just start a thread in the sports area at bbs.keyhole and link back to it. Granted, it would be easier if you could attach here.
