Bikes: I tour on a Waterford Adventurecycle. It is a fabulous touring bike.

Riding across France

My family is planning on spending 2 weeks in Provence (France) in June, 2007.

My first thought was to arrive with everyone else but spend another 2 weeks touring around Provence and then do a loop out toward Spain. But, I am already going to spend 2 weeks in Provence with my family so I will have seen lots of it before I would start my ride.

My next idea is to leave 2 weeks (or so) early, fly into Heathrow (family going to Provence lives near Heathrow), sleep a night or two with in-laws, assemble the bike, ride down to Portsmouth, take the ferry over to Cherbourg, and ride to Provence. The real benefit of this idea (aside from riding across France) is that the bike box can be brought by my wife when she stops over in Heathrow on her way to Provence.

A third idea is a variation of the first one. Arrive with the family (and bike) in Provence, spend 2 weeks there, and then tour from Provence (southeast France) ending 2 weeks and 600 miles away. One downside to this is making sure that me, the bike box, the bike, and my air flight home all end up at the same place.

I'm currently leaning on the "ride across France" option. But, I would be very interested in any and all thoughts on the other two.

Thanks,

Ray

I vote for option 2.
