Dallas to Shreveport

It looks like I am going to do this little trip around Xmas time. Was wondering if anybody had gone this route before and had any suggestions (ie Highways to avoid, towns to hit, camp sites).

Any help is appreciated. We have done a bunch of short trips, but this is the longest one to date. I am pretty excited, especially if the weather holds up!

Here's some ideas. You can take TX 243 from Kaufman to Canton, then TX64 to Tyler. You can get creative and pick some FM roads to avoid the state highways if you like, but that's probably the most direct route that doesn't involve I-20 (legal, but not fun). To get from Tyler to Shreveport, check the various bike routes on the Longview bike club's web site. They have a pretty extensive set of routes all through that area that may help you out. In general though, any FM road should be good cycling.

Tyler State Park, north of the city off of I-20, is a great state park, complete with some challenging MTB trails. You'll probably want to detour around Tyler anyway, so that would be a good stopping point for the night. There's a good BBQ restaurant south of the park, right off the interstate. Not much else nearby for food.

I can probably help you get to Kaufman, or similar area if you let me know where you plan to start. I'm pretty familiar with the roads on the east side of Dallas.
