Best route into Calgary from the south?

What's the safest, easist way into Calgary from Highway 541 out of the Kananaskis area? Is downtown most safely reached via local rail from a south side station, or is the trans Canada trail that runs through Fish Creek and north along the river an acceptable alternative for a loaded touring bike? Thanks.

Where exactly are you going and what time of year?

Both of your alternatives will work, the bike path along the river north of fish creek is probably icy right now, and I am not sure if it has been completely fixed since the floods of 2005.

Let me know if you want more detailed information there are a number of acceptable routes from the south side to downtown.

the city of calgary pathway and bike way map is here:

The pathway is fine as long as it has been repaired. I had some issues last summer with a couple sections, but you can find work arounds with a little thought. The c-train runs from the edge of the city in the south (hwy 2) right into downtown. You can ride it with bikes no problem except at rush hour.

I work in Okotoks which is 25kms south of Calgary. If you keep me posted I can (most likely) ride into town with you along the bike path or lead you to the c-train station.
