Picture: Coupled bike and its box
Attached picture may be useful to those who travel with their bike...
Here is my only bike (Seven Alaris), and the box it flies in.
Made possible by S+S Couplers (on down tube and cross bar).
Save $100 each way on airlines... box size is within the 'allowed' dimensions.

I love the idea in principle but , doesn't it means that you have to fly back from the same airport?

yes. I travel a lot, and generally fly into and out of the same airport. If using different airports then the cardboard box is probably only way to go, unless one uses hard bike boxes+taxis+maildrop or a (ugh) soft case. BTW, the box can be converted to be a trailer (costs extra, of coarse). (English also, but not quite a gentleman; I live in California)

What's the packed weight in that case ?
bike = 18 lbs
foam etc = 2lb.
note.. box has wheels (not seen in photo).
The bike (Seven Alaris straight guage ti) pulls a bob trailer (loaded=40lb) very well...
Vancouver, Can--> LA
London --> Bilboa
Use triple crank when pulling the Bob.

There, a guy with a road bike not afraid to go touring. He "runs what he brung".
Interloc Racing Designs now makes 11-32 and 11-34 TEN SPEED cassettes.
It might possibly be of some interest to you at some time.

Thanks!.... I gave up hope in finding a decent wide range cassette a while ago... what derailler set would you recommend?
