I purchased a video from MEC documenting a tour of three cyclist across Alaska ( 50 day ), back in 2003. Pretty good watch, I'd recommend the video. I would of liked to see more info winter camping etc.

Any here ever tried a winter, freeze balls tour?

disappointed about the weather here as well?

I did a weekend tour 7th January. The weather was not too cold approximately 0 Celsius (32,00 Fahrenheit). It was raining and snowing all the day. I had a sleeping bag “Coleman” down to -18 Celsius (-0,40 Fahrenheit), a polartec “bipolar” jacket and trousers, a wind block jacket, a rain jacket, trekking boots and wool socks.
I slept in a forest where no wind was and probably my tent wasn’t so necessary, and a tarp would be enough. I think the tent gave me psychological comfort mainly. I’m not ready yet to awake in the night face to face with a fox or another wild animal. The tent is double wall it worked great, no condensate problems, but I cannot say that it was warmer inside than outside. I used an inflatable mattress with a foam pad on it in addition.
There is not real winter in central Russia this year. That is why I went on that short bike tour not to ski, and I have discovered winter cycle-touring for myself.
It will be a bit colder soon down to -10 Celsius (14,00 Fahrenheit) so I have bought Nokia winter tires ($100), have replaced my suspension fork with rigid titanium one ($134) , have bought hydraulic disk brakes Hayes HFX-9 6’ ($215) to replace my mechanical Tektro.
My resume is. That was great!!! Despite rain, cold, and dirt on the road. I was a bit chilly in the morning, when getting out of the bed. The tip is to start to do something immediately to warm yourself before breakfast and it will be ok. I made some mistakes of course. It was necessary to take off some clothes before cycling not to get wet inside. Probably it would be much more difficult to spend second night in a forest because my clothes got wet finally because of sweat, I don’t know. This wasn’t my goal anyway and unfortunately will not be soon because weekends are short.

I'm wondering is snowmobile trails would be good for touring? The snow would be packed down making for an easier ride. My concern would be those crazy snowmobilers...they move pretty freaking fast.

I used to live in Jackson - Wyoming not Mississippi - where there is some serious snow. There was a popular snowmobile route into Granite Hot Springs that I rode a couple of times. Even with studded snow tires, it's gotta be cold and cloudy - - really hardpacked - - and even then it was a lot of work. I found it easier to x-country ski. What really IS nice is when various parks plow and let cyclists in before the road is officially open. Yellowstone and Grand Teton were great. Check with Parks Canada for similar options nearby.

In other words, mostly off road through sled dog country! That's what I call intense. Expect temps below -40 f. and possibly below -60 f. for the interior.

Anyone know if the Bering Straight would freeze over enough to cross over to Asia by bike? Now that would be intense! And incredibly dangerous!
