One problem faced by touring cyclist is how to get back home once you've reached your destination.
Public transportation is often used, but it's expensive and you have the hassle of packing your bike.
I've thought of a alternative.
How about hitching a ride with a long-haul trucker? Sure, they have rules against taking passengers, but
they're not supposed to pop little white pills and fudge on their logbooks either. Some have even been known to break the speed limit.
I'm betting you could slip a hundred dollar bill to some good-old-boy trucker in say, California, and
he'd be more that happy to haul you as far as he was going.

You could slip $100 to Amtrak and make it a good way across the country.

The Amtrak idea isn't really too bad. I've taken it a few times. Some good conversation and relaxation can be had.

I'm doing the Adventure Cycling's Grand Canyon ride this year. I can take an Amtrak to Salt Lake City but I'll have to take a plane from Tempe back to KCMO. It takes a little research but there are quite a few safer ways to get home. I took a bus to Denver a few years ago. At that time, it was the cheapest ride.

Yeah, I wouldn't advise hitching...it's pretty dangerous, and, after years of spending time in and around truck stops, I can tell you firsthand that many (not all) truckers are not of the highest quality....they do tend to be the crude, wolf-whistling, cat-calling kind.
