Route recommendation: New Haven, CT (or New York) to Washington, DC

I am planning a trip from southern Connecticut/New York area to Washington, DC, in late May, and I am trying to figure out a route. One possibility is to roughly follow the planned East Coast Greenway, but that looks like a fairly urban route. I was thinking it might be nice to do more rural riding. I searched around for other routes people have done, but I didn't find much. Any recommendations?

Thanks!
