Sugino 600 series vs.?

Hello everyone,

Just curious, but I'm about to build up an LHT, and I wonder why Sugino so dominates parts selection for touring bikes. I was thinking about a Shimano Deore LX crank, but I wonder if the tapered square bottom bracket needed for the Suginos is a plus because of its popularity and simplicity. Any thoughts?

So far: Nitto Noodles
Cane Creek shortie cantis
LX shifting off of Shim. bar-ends
spd/platform pedals
King headset
Wheels? (pretty set on XT hubs, 36, three cross) probably beefy Mavic and 2 mm spokes
Champion Flyer saddle
Stem, seatpost?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Mark

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Simplicity and brute strength always win out over saving a few grams on a touring bike.

The Sugino is reasonably priced, looks good, has the important 110/74 BCD that lets you put just
about any combo of rings on it, from racing to full on touring, and I still like the simplicity of the square
taper rather than an integrated crank/BB bearing.
