Insulating your Hennessy Hammock?

Oh no! not another HH thread in the touring forum!

I just got a HH Explorer Dlx Asym and i'm wondering what other HH users are insulating with? i know Hennesey makes an underquilt and i believe a company called kickass! is making one as well. anyone using under quilts or have any other tips for me on staying warm on cold nights in my hammock?

Thanks,
-Ryan

Use that thin foil and foam sheet. The kind thats shiny foil on one side and thin foam on the other. They are BRILLIANT at insulating you in a hammock. I slide one in between my sleeping bag and the bivy sac so it won't slide around.

Where do you find this kind of foam pad? Are you talking about those things that people use in car windshields? I've seen that mentioned in other threads but is there something better available?

http://forums.backpacker.com/eve do a search in the gear forum. My experience with the silver windshield thing is less than desirable in the HH. Since air circulates under the hammock all the time, a standard air mattress will not keep you warm, even in July. (YMMV) Most any insulated air mattress works good. The key word is insulated. The ones below are examples with some in regular length, and some in long. The Exped brand is really only needed in winter camping. I will use an insulated mattress on bottom year round, but in the summer you might just need a very thin bag liner instead of a sleeping bag on top. Here is one example.http://www.rei.com/product/755075 open it up and use as a blanket. In the HH you have better luck using the sleeping bag as a blanket any time. Good prices available here as well. http://www.ems.com/ http://www.sierratradingpost.com/

Yep, that is the thing I'm talking about, and nope, I don't think there is anything better.

Why not just use a foam pad? Are we being so weight wienie that we cannot even use a standard RidgeRest? One is already up off the grounds...insulation is all one needs. Air mattress? Take them on down the line, mate.

It isn't about the weight-weenie factor. It's that the foil part of these mats reflects body heat back in a way that the foam doesn't. It is warmer. I don't know how it works, and don't particularly need to know. It just does. :)

Sounds like you are doing some research and have noticed several different options. Try out a few and see what works for you. It may be a combination of what you have found.

Serious HH campers need some serious insulation.

World Famous make a sleeping pad with high density foam on one side and foil on the other. It might require a trim to fit into your Expedition. You will feel the heat reflecting from your body the moment you lie on it. To maximize your comfort, especially when camping in the shoulders (spring/fall), wear polyester fleece next to your skin. There is still not a substitute for a good goose down mummy sleeping bag.

Anyone who needs more info should visit my stealth camping journals.
